Woodmore Elementary S.T.E.M. Fair
What is a STEM Fair?
- an event where every project entry must have a testable question and data gathering
- an event that showcases the connection between science, technology, engineering, and mathematics
- an opportunity for students to explore the natural world and apply scientific skills and processes while seeking knowledge
-an opportunity for schools to showcase student accomplishments
STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics
Projects should be student driven.
A parent's support is important in making the STEM Fair Project process an exciting one. Project ideas should come from the students, and the project should be driven by them. Parents should use their best judgment in deciding when to get involved, such as when there is a potential safety issue. For especially young kids, parents may provide some guidance, but it is important that the kids be able to call the project their own.

Need help choosing a topic?
When it comes to choosing a topic, the sky is the limit! What have you wondered about? The best topics come from your own genuine curiosity about how something works, or why something is the way that it is. But if you have trouble thinking of something on your own, the internet is full of resources to help you choose a topic. Remember that not all projects listed on the internet or in books are not always ones that lead to an experiment project where something is changed and the result is measured. Also, you may choose a question from the suggestion sheet given to you by your teacher.

Register to participate.
All young scientists wishing to display a project at the fair must register in advance through this online form. We strongly encourage you to register once your project question has been approved so that your project will have a spot in the fair. If you miss the registration deadline your child is still required to complete a project. Final registration deadline is December 20.

Judging and awards.
Our goal is to encourage scientific exploration and discovery and promote a deep lifelong passion for science. Each participant will have an opportunity to briefly present their project to a judge, and they will each receive a small prize and a certificate. Awards will be presented for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place and Honorary Mention in several categories as determined by their scores from the judges. Students are judged based upon merits of their projects and their of the scientific processes.
Volunteers needed!
A big event like the STEM Fair wouldn't be possible without the help of numerous volunteers. We have all kinds of different jobs to be done, so if think you can spare an hour or two the day before the fair for set-up or the day of the fair as a judge, we would love your help. Please contact Ms. M. Jones at marsha.jones@pgcps.org and sign up now!
Submit your photos!
During the Woodmore announcements our hope is to be able to play a slide show of photos taken by you! So parents -- while your young scientist is busy conducting that wild experiment, sneak out your digital camera and capture some shots. Then upload them here by February 16, so we can include them in the slide show. Note: All submissions may not be included in the show.
